When a baby makes sounds, we think they lack such meaning we would attribute to an articulate speaker. But we as grown-ups are doing the same as the baby: we ourselves make the same nonsensical sounds - the only difference being that we have settled upon a set of ‘mumbo jumbo’ signifiers which can be duplicated and accurately imitated by our hearers. When you look at a baby “making sounds”, know that you are no better, and that both of you mean specific things.
